How to Maintain a Ceramic Coating

You have just made the investment of protecting your new or used car and want to maximise the performance of your ceramic coating and ensure the longevity of the coating so it can continue to perform for years to come. It is important to maintain a ceramic coating, the good news is, it is simple.

Below we will go through some tips and guides on the best way to look after your newely protected car.

5 Tips for maintaining your Ceramic Coating

  • Wash your car regularly

Whether you drive your car daily or its a bit of a garage queen and only drive on weekends, it is best to wash it on a regular basis to help avoid the build up of excessive contaminants. This doesnt mean you need to be out there every weekend detailing your car. Depending on how often you drive it and how dirty it gets all it generally needs is a quick wash with the correct techniques.

  • Always wash in the shade

Heat from the sun can cause water to dry very fast, something you want to prevent when washing your car so tap water that could contain damaging calcium and mineral deposits doesnt dry on the paint work. Washing in the shade and out of direct sunlight we make it a much easier and enjoyable process.

  • Use the Two Bucket Method

The two bucket method of washing a car is a proven method to reduce swirl marks and scratches and will keep your car looking its best. For those that are not familiar with the two bucket wash method, it is a method of using one bucket filled with soapy water and another with clean water. Once you have washed one panel with a sponge or washmitt from the soapy water you then rinse it in the bucket of clean water so you are not cross contaminating and putting dirt and grit back in your wash water.

  • Use Car Wash specific Shampoo

It is always best to use a quality car wash shampoo such as one that is pH neutral, this will ensure it lubricates the surface and lifts any dirt and grime away from the paint work to prevent scratching.

  • Use quality Drying Towels

Throw away those old leather and synthetic chamois, they do no favours for your paint work and can be quiet abrasive. A quality microfibre drying towel is much softer on the paint work and will prevent any abrasion to the ceramic coating.

Why is it important to maintain a Ceramic Coating?

Unfortunately everything in this world has a lifespan, just like servicing your car the correct maintenaince is required to ensure you get the most out of your paint protection coating.

Dirt, grime and debris can build up on the surface that needs to be cleaned away, this ensures the ceramic coating is exposed and its hydrophobic (water beading) properties can occur which in return will help keep your car cleaner for longer and easier to clean.

What will happen if the Paint Protection Coating is not maintained?

Even the best ceramic coatings are not bulletproof, some even go as far as saying you never have to wash your car again which is completely false (if you want your car to look good and maintain the coating!), so what can happen if it is not maintained properly?

  • Loss of shine – The build up of dirt and grime will decrease the shine and gloss of your paint work.
  • Reduced hydrophobic effect – Everyone loves seeing the water bead up on their paint work and literally fly of the paint work as you drive along, with a build up of dirt and grime this isnt going to happen as the water will be sitting ontop of that dirt and grime and the hydrophobic layer of the coating wont be exposed.

It is also important to mention that you should not cause any abrasion to the surface, this means staying away from automatic car washes and brush washes, they will do nothing but scratch your paint work and wear away a ceramic coating.
